In Canada, licensed natural health products carry an eight-digit Natural Product Number (NPN) from Health Canada. Prescription options are only available after a practitioner licensed in your province or territory has assessed you. Results differ between individuals.

Getting started

From comparing to choosing, in three moves

  1. 1

    Move 1

    Line up the options

Put formats, prices, subscription rules and support side by side without opening ten tabs.

  2. 2

    Move 2

    Let a professional decide

Anything that needs a prescription is only offered if a licensed practitioner agrees it suits you.

  3. 3

    Move 3

    Receive it privately

Most services ship across Canada in plain packaging — check each provider's delivery details.

About erectile dysfunction

A common concern — and often a signal worth listening to.

Erectile dysfunction (ED) is ongoing difficulty getting or maintaining an erection for sex. It grows more likely with age and frequently relates to circulation, so it can point to heart or metabolic issues early. That's a good reason to raise it with a healthcare provider.

40+

After 40, ED becomes noticeably more common and is frequently tied to heart disease, diabetes and high blood pressure.Further reading: Canadian Urological Association

Five things to weigh up

  • The care model

Does a licensed practitioner look at your health history, and can you reach them afterwards?

  • Routine or occasional

Programs are built either for daily use or for now-and-then use. Pick the one that matches your life.

  • Format

Providers offer different formats — tablets, chewables, powders or liquids.

  • All-in cost in CAD

Look past the first-order offer to renewals, subscriptions, taxes and delivery fees.

  • Ease of use

Simple ordering, support in your language where possible and discreet shipping all count.

Think heart, too. ED and heart disease share several risk factors. Mention any symptoms to your family doctor or nurse practitioner.

Ways to approach ED

Three paths men commonly consider

A general overview, not medical advice. Check with a licensed healthcare provider before you begin any treatment or natural health product.

Useful for everyone

Everyday habits

  • Stay active and eat well
  • Prioritize sleep, a healthy weight and stress relief
  • Cut back on alcohol; avoid smoking and vaping

Good circulation and a healthy heart are closely linked to erectile function.

Assessment required

Care led by a practitioner

  • Begins with a review of your health
  • A licensed practitioner decides on next steps
  • Follow-up and changes as needed

Whether prescription treatment is safe for you can only be decided by a practitioner licensed where you live.

No prescription

Natural health products

  • Check the label for an eight-digit NPN
  • Read the ingredients and directions
  • Ask a pharmacist about interactions with your medications

Only Health Canada–licensed products have an NPN, and they may only make the claims Health Canada has approved. Results vary.

Safety first

In an emergency, call 911.
  1. 1

Never combine ED medication with nitrates (such as nitroglycerin) or riociguat — blood pressure can drop to dangerous levels.

  2. 2

Let your healthcare provider know about heart conditions, a recent heart attack or stroke, very low or poorly controlled blood pressure, or liver or kidney disease.

  3. 3

Alpha-blockers and certain HIV or antifungal medications may require a dose change — tell your provider if you take them.

  4. 4

Get emergency help for an erection that lasts over 4 hours, sudden loss of vision or hearing, or chest pain during sex.

When to book an appointment

Speak with your family doctor, a nurse practitioner or a walk-in clinic if ED persists for several weeks, starts suddenly, or comes with chest pain, breathlessness, diabetes or high blood pressure. In most provinces, 811 connects you with a registered nurse at no cost.

How we score

The six checks every provider goes through

We apply one checklist to every service, putting care and safety ahead of advertising claims.

01

What's on offer

Products and formats available, and whether natural health products show a valid Health Canada NPN.

02

Who provides care

Whether prescription care runs through a practitioner licensed in your province, with a genuine health review.

03

What you really pay

Starting price, renewal price, taxes and the final amount in Canadian dollars.

04

How it arrives

Provinces and territories covered, packaging and typical delivery times.

05

How safety is checked

How thoroughly the intake asks about heart medications, nitrates and other risks that should stop an automatic approval.

06

How we're paid

We are upfront that brands may pay us and that this can influence where they appear.

See how we score providers
01What does online men's health care look like in Canada?

Most licensed virtual care services begin with an online health questionnaire. When it makes sense, you then have a virtual appointment with a physician or nurse practitioner licensed in your province or territory. If they recommend treatment, the prescription goes to a licensed Canadian pharmacy, which fills it and ships it to you.

02Can anyone take ED treatment?

No. ED medications can react with nitrates, some blood pressure drugs and certain health conditions, so a licensed practitioner needs to review your history first. ED medication and nitrates must never be taken together.

03What does an NPN on the label mean?

A Natural Product Number (NPN) is the eight-digit licence number Health Canada gives a natural health product after reviewing its safety, efficacy and quality. Check for it before buying a non-prescription product, and you can look it up in Health Canada's Licensed Natural Health Products Database.

04Who should avoid ED medication?

People who use nitrates, have had a recent heart attack or stroke, have very low blood pressure, or live with certain eye or bleeding disorders are commonly excluded. A good service screens for these during intake, so answer every question honestly.

05What will it cost?

Costs depend on the product, the format, whether you subscribe or buy once, and any current promotion. Compare the introductory price with the renewal price, plus taxes and delivery, on each provider's website.

06How quickly will my order arrive?

It depends on how fast your assessment is approved, pharmacy processing time, where you live and the courier. Remote and northern communities can wait longer. Check the current estimate when you order.

07Who protects my health information?

Any provider that collects health information has to safeguard it under Canadian privacy laws such as PIPEDA and provincial health privacy legislation. NorthCareGuide never collects health information — review each provider's privacy policy before you share yours.
